I put a post of Electronic Arts Facebook page for the game and want to send them a formal email on the subject. You can interact with them and teach them to talk, take them places, but one option I don't like that comes up on the 'pie' chart menu of interactions when you click on them is 'Set Free'. They require feeding and cage cleaning as well.

The main pets are dogs, cats, and horses, but there are also options to buy birds. I play the Sims 3 Pets, it's a wonderful expansion for the Sims 3 where you can buy all sorts of pets for your virtual families.
